Pumpkins

Since we are in the Season of Pumpkins, I thought I would share this article about pumpkins that I found interesting:

Pumpkins, which are actually fruits, not vegetables, range considerably in size. Some varieties weight less than a pound, while giant pumpkins can grow to more than 1,000 pounds! Pumpkins are members of the gourd family, which also includes watermelons and zucchini. They are 90% water and also contain high concentrations of potassium and vitamin A.

Pumpkins, which grow from vines, originated in Central America and were a popular crop among Native Americans. Some tribes used the seeds for food and medicine and made sleeping mats out of dried pumpkin strips. American colonists invented the pumpkin pie, but their original version used the pumpkin as the crust, not the main ingredient. They cut off pumpkin tops to make handy edible bowls, which they filled with milk, honey and spices and then cooked over a fire or hot ashes.

Even if you don't enter, a visit to Tristan's Blog is well worth it. He writes interesting articles, posts fabulous pictures of home decor, furniture, and the like from days gone by, and his mixed media art is something to see.

Countdown: 2 Days

Treasures I Bought

Amanda and I had a lot of fun the past two days roaming the shops in the Roanoke Valley. I didn't find my dream chandelier, but I did purchase a few items I liked.
This afternoon, we took a little drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway. So beautiful ~ even with the color beginning to fade. We then drove up Mill Mountain to the Roanoke Star. It is fun to go up there and look out on the Roanoke Valley ~ a beautiful site surrounded by mountains.
I purchased some skeleton keys - always a good item for altered art projects *** a garden obelisk trellis - with a shabby, chippy paint job - love it *** a metal stake with a fish finial on top - a fun garden item *** a vintage nativity set made in Italy - I love nativity sets and find it hard to pass them up when I see the older ones *** a 1983 doll with a porcelain head, made by Avon - she is so sweet and in excellent condition *** a vintage crocheted table cover - wonderful and in great condition - I put it under a few of my small Halloween pillows and decor.
The view from the top of Mill Mountain at the Roanoke Star - breathtaking.
I had a very enjoyable two days with my almost daughter-in-law. They are leaving to go back to SC on Friday. ): I will miss them until our next visit.

The Hunt

Casey and Amanda arrived Friday night and will be staying for several more days. (: They had a busy, enjoyable weekend visiting with friends here in Virginia. Today, Amanda and I are off on one of our fun hunts. We plan to climb around in several of the area consignment and antique shops. We'll see what treasures we can find. I have been trying to locate a small, shabby chandelier for the guest bedroom that I finally finished. Maybe I'll find something today. Whatever the case, I will share if I find anything exciting!
I wish all of you a day that will hold some small exciting event that will make you smile!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Nancy !!

Saturday Sunshine

Yesterday wasn't bad - it only drizzled very lightly for a short time and today there are blue skies, a little sun, and just a few grey clouds rolling around up there. The temp is fantastic! The forecast for this weekend was gruesome (rain! rain! rain!) and it did not come to pass, so I am thrilled about that. My son and his fiance are here from SC for about 5 days and that, too, makes me very happy!
They pulled in last evening and we were up till almost 3 this morning laughing, talking and looking at old photos. I am not feeling too bad right now but I imagine later in the day it is going to catch up with me.
So, with that in mind, here are some more beauties I took the other day.

A Joyful Day

It was a gorgeous day in the high 70s so I went for a ride this afternoon just to enjoy the colors of Fall. We are supposed to get rain this weekend and I fear the loss of many leaves and much of the color we are experiencing right now. I drove around for about 2 hours wanting to take as many photos as I could. After 172 shots, I headed home. I was filled with joy from the beauty and the warmth of the day. Here are just a few of the photos I took today.
