It is a quiet peaceful Monday morning here in Virginia. January 30th ~ it is more like a cool spring morning than the middle of winter. The only snow I've seen this year has been on the news. I miss the snow. I'm a snow lover, used to the heavy snow days back when I lived in Ohio. I grew up in the snow ~ never minded driving in it, never minded shoveling it. I especially miss those nights when the snow was falling. I would go outside to the calm serene sight and feel of it ~ everything clean and white under the star filled sky ~ snowflakes melting on my cheeks ~ breathing the cool crisp air ~ watching the snow on the ground twinkle from the light of the moon ~ nothing like it. Well, a girl can dream... and I'll always have those memories. Although, I'm almost certain it will snow again here in Virginia someday, some year.

Once again, I must apologize for being away from my Blog for so long. January has been a hectic month and has left me with little time to myself.
Yesterday was my 64th Birthday. No big deal in my eyes. I have never been one to let age stop me from feeling very much alive and filled with desire to accomplish the many goals I see for my future. I very seldom sit still for very long as there is much to accomplish in a world that seems to be spinning faster each year. I must say that I feel blessed that many of the friends I've come to know through blogging, though younger, could care less about age. It pleases me, also, that a lot of bloggers are in their 60s and enjoying their creativity time and planning future events that will bring happiness into their lives and the lives of those they love. I hope to be around for a long time and, God-willing, I plan to fulfill some of those dreams that are still floating around in my head. Also, being the "baby" of the family always helps make me feel young.
My sister and bother-in-law arrived a week ago from Ohio and will be with us for another week. We have been spending time visiting and running here and there. Jake keeps me very busy. It is no joke that a puppy is much like having a baby in the home. He requires a lot of my time and attention. He is such a cute and good puppy, I am enjoying every minute as we form a solid bond.
My family gave me a very nice birthday ~ special gifts, a delicious cake, lunch with my husband, a little time away in the afternoon to run to some of my favorite places, a good dinner on my return, a fun and lengthy phone call from my son, and an evening of talk and laughter. I received many beautiful birthday cards which I love and an especially sweet one from my husband. The many wonderful birthday wishes I received on facebook and the videos and ecards received were fun and appreciated. They all made for a fun and happy birthday.
I received one gift in the mail that I would like to share with you. It has a special meaning to me and brought tears to my eyes when I opened it. It is from a dear Ohio friend. We grew up in the same neighborhood and attended the same grade school and high school. The one thing that bound us together with many other wonderful people was our church ~ St. Paul's Catholic Church in Canton, Ohio. St. Paul's was our foundation while growing up. We attended Mass there every morning before going through the doors into the building that housed our school of St. Paul's.
There are many many memories there - my baptism, first communion, confirmation, the formation of friendships that taught me the true meaning of friendship, and eight years of schooling by Nuns, Priests, and others, who helped make me who I am today.

This beautifully framed verse, with the photo of the large stained glass window that is in St. Paul's Church, touched my heart. Susie, the sender of this special gift, knows what that church means to all of us who grew up in that neighborhood. The church was closed last year and when that last Mass ended, many pieces of broken hearts remained behind those walls and will stay there for all time. Thank you, Susie. I love this gift and I will cherish it always.

My Amaryllis opened up this morning. They are such a soft, delicate pink and have a bit of a shimmer to them. Hard to capture that in a photo. They won't last long, so I plan to enjoy the beauty while I can.

Jake, sunning today in one of his favorite spots in the living room. We have a lot of windows and the sun pours in. He moves across the room to the sunny spots as the sun moves across the sky. We've only had him a little over a month now and I can't imagine life without him.

TIME!!! Wow, here it is ~ already the 2nd day of the New Year. And a Monday. There is something about the word Monday that makes me want to NOT do anything. But, that will not work ~ it's the first week in a new year and there are more than a few things that need my attention today.

As promised, I am posting the art I made yesterday. The mixed media piece is 9" x 12" and I had fun doing it. Corrine's words, "Let Go" kept running through my mind, so "let go" I did! It felt good to just let it develop into what it is. the Inchies speak for themselves. One a day ~ this means I only have 363 to go! It will be interesting to see what might develop from these.

I want to paint more today, so I better get those Monday tasks done. The sooner I can get into the studio, the better.

A Year of Inchies

Well, it is New Years's Day, 2012. The Pork and Sauerkraut meal is over and the kitchen is cleaned up. While Terry, Mom, and Jake nap, I am taking this opportunity to make some art. My goal for 2012 is to make time to be creative. I have piles of work I could do today, but I made up my mind I would devote the afternoon to being creative.

Inchies

For some time now, I've been wanting to make Inchies. Inchies are 1" x 1" works of art. They are small, easy to work with, and you don't have to devote a lot of time to them. There are many things you can do with them ~ you can collect them, make collages, make greeting cards, use them in mixed media art pieces, put them in journals, swap them, or use them in any manner that suits your needs.

I am planning to make an Inchie a day. What will I do with 365 Inchies at the end of the year? Hard telling. I will probably use them as the year goes by.

I've signed up in the Creative Every Day group for 2012. Having been involved in this for the past 2 years, I failed in my attempt to be creative every day. Of course, the creativity does not have to be a painting. You can be creative in many ways every day ~ you might make a new recipe, knit a shawl, or you might sew a curtain for the window. There are many ways to be creative!

I will post my Inchies on my blog, probably a few at a time. If nothing else, making Inchies will get me into the studio and wonderful things could develop from that!!

So, I am off to play with paint, colored pencils, ink, or whatever my fingers decide to pick up. I am excited to get to it.

If Jake could talk, I'm sure he might say those words. He has grown a little, but is still just as cute as ever. I have to admit he has stolen our hearts forever.
He was the perfect Christmas gift for us to give each other. Although, the timing wasn't all that good. The entire month of December has been pretty hectic. Mom began Physical Therapy this month for her spinal stenosis which has been giving her unbelievable pain. So, I have to leave to take her several times a week. Jake does not like to be alone and I don't know for sure if it is harder on him or me when I leave.
In the wee hours of Christmas morning, I woke not feeling well. By mid morning, it was obvious I had the flu. Having spent the entire day and night in bed sicker than I can remember being for a long time, dear Terry tended to Jake the entire time and sweet Mom (in spite of her pain) managed to put food on the table for she and Terry. The Christmas dinner I had planned was not to be.
Tuesday night, Mom became ill with the flu. I was up most of the night with her, so I may have set myself back a little. I am feeling better, but still dragging some and I don't have much of an appetite. Mom is feeling better today. Terry has been fighting it, as well, but thankfully he didn't get it as bad as I did. So, poor little Jake would have been up a creek if we had both been bed bound.
Since December was such a busy and crazy month, I didn't get my Christmas cards done this year. I felt very bad about that because it is the one contact I have with some people. I decided that I would do New Year's cards instead. Well, the flu pretty much squashed that plan.
So, December is going out with a bang and a New Year will be upon us shortly. I look forward to a new and better year in which I hope to make more creative time and write more Blog posts. 2011 was not the best year ~ many challenges and losses ~ but as long as I have my health, my family, and my friends, I am grateful to be alive and that is a beautiful thing. I've met more wonderful friends this year through facebook and blogging ~ I hope to get to know them better in 2012 and share much artistic happiness.
I'm not one for New Year's Resolutions. They usually go by the wayside with most people. I only have one goal for the new year ~ MAKE MORE TIME FOR ART!!! That's the plan. If it works, you'll see more posts with finished art work instead of so many works in progress that just don't seem to get finished. I hope to open my etsy shop in the new year, as well.
Well, if nothing else, this "not feeling so good" gave me time to sit down and write this post. Jake is squeaking ~ I must go see what he needs. (:

Reflection

During this busy time of Christmas preparation, take some time to stop, light a candle, take a deep breath, and reflect on what Christmas is really all about. Enjoy a few moments of relaxation. Let some memories of Christmases past come to mind. Go back to your childhood and those happy memories of days filled with anticipation and then the excitement of Christmas Day. Remember those loved ones who are no longer with you and think about the Christmases that you shared with them. Look through your old albums at Christmas photographs. I guarantee at least one smile on your face and in your heart. One more thing. Say a little prayer that man will come to his senses and bring Christ back into Christmas. I hope this will be a merry and blessed Christmas season for all of you.

Hello my friends!!

It has been a while since I posted at any length. Several weeks ago I cut my finger at the knuckle ~ it had a splint on it for 10 days making it difficult to type. That healed and then a week ago Tuesday I was outside decorating the tree. Just about to finish when the leg sank deeply into the wet mulch. The ladder went one way ~ I went the other. Ouch!! I am still healing from that fall. Badly bruised, scraped, and sore, but fortunately I didn't break anything.

There is good news, though.

Jake!!!

Terry and I had no plans of owning a dog anytime soon. Last Sunday, Jake came into our lives. We first saw him Friday night, held him, fell in love with him, and bought him on Sunday.

Jake is a 12-week-old miniature dachshund and as you can see above, has a face that made us want to take him home.

Jake has changed our lives in 5 short days. We are on new schedules, shopping in pet stores, making many trips outdoors, and basically learning how to live life with a dog in the house.

I LOVE this little dog. I love his face... his little body... his personality... the smell of him... the feel of his soft coat of short hair... the little wrinkles on his forehead... the way he cocks his little eyebrows... the way he squeaks when he wants held and loved... his little paws... the wagging tail. I love how well he's doing with housetraining. I feared this might be a nightmare process, but he is doing really well in that department.

I realize we have a long way to go with a lot of training ahead of us, but I'm thinking Jake is going to bring a lot of joy into our lives.

I wasn't sure how Mom was going to feel about Jake. The only pet we ever had growing up was Chippy ~ a chipmunk. Patrick caught Chippy on a golf course, brought him home, and he lived in a cage in the garage until the day he died.

Well... Mom is smitten with Jake. I love the photo of Mom's beautiful, loving, 94-year-old hands holding Jake on her lap.

So... this is my rather lengthy explanation for being absent from my Blog. Sometimes life just has other things in mind for us.

A mother was concerned about her

kindergarten son, Timmy, walking to school.

He didn't want his mother to walk with him.

She wanted to give him the feeling that he

had some independence but yet know that

he was safe.

So she had an idea of how to handle it.

She asked a neighbor if she would please

follow him to school in the mornings,

staying at a distance, so he probably

wouldn't notice her.

The neighbor said that since she was up

early with her toddler anyway, it would be a

good way for them to get some exercise as

well, so she agreed.

The next school day, the neighbor and her

little girl set out following behind Timmy as

he walked to school with another neighbor

girl he knew.

She did this for the whole week.

As the two walked and chatted, kicking

stones and twigs, Timmy's little friend

noticed the same lady was following them

as she seemed to do every day all week.

Finally she said to Timmy,

'Have you noticed that lady following us to

school all week? Do you know her?'

Timmy nonchalantly replied, 'Yeah, I know

who she is.'

The little girl said, 'Well, who is she?'

'That's just Shirley Goodnest,' Timmy

replied, 'and her daughter Marcy.'

'Shirley Goodnest? Who is she and why is

she following us?'

'Well,' Timmy explained, 'every night my

Mum makes me say the 23rd Psalm with my

prayers, 'cuz she worries about me so

much.

And in the Psalm, it says, 'Shirley Goodnest

(surely goodness) and Marcy (mercy) shall

follow me all the days of my life', so I guess

I'll just have to get used to it!'

This year I am so very thankful for my blessings. As I reflect on them, I realize they are abundant: My family * friends * health * and home * That I will spend Thanksgiving Day with my son and his wife * That my Blog returned to the internet and with no loss of information * my new computer * my cold is gone * the colors, textures, and smells of Fall * that God has allowed my sweet Mother to remain with us for 94 years and counting * I am thankful for the friendships I've developed through Blogging * I'm thankful for my talents and my interests. These are just a few things I am thankful for ~ there are so many. But, this year, the one thing I am truly thankful for is that I was blessed with the most wonderful brother. I will always miss him, but now I can reflect on our years together and what a special relationship we shared, without being overcome with sadness. I know how much he loved me and I remember how we were there for each other through the good and the bad. Nothing can take those memories away. I feel he is still looking out for me and I am thankful for that.

When I was young, Thanksgiving Day pretty much meant a day off work and a big feast of turkey with all the trimmings. As the years have passed, I have come to know the true meaning. I must say it is a joyful feeling to take time to reflect on all the good things in my life.

I wish all of you ~ friends and family ~ a BEAUTIFUL THANKSGIVING DAY!!

Well, friends, I've had a lousy cold for almost 2 weeks and it is finally on its way out. You all know that miserable state of not being able to breath through your nose and coughing, coughing, coughing. Thank goodness, I didn't feel too bad other than those inconveniences, but I'm so happy it's almost gone. I slept through the night with little coughing last night so I feel better than I have for quite a while.

A while back, I mentioned I was having computer problems. That issue is resolved as I got a new computer about 3 weeks ago. I went with a laptop this time and I'm very happy with it. I had Vista before and Windows 7 is a little different. I've already adjusted to those changes, but my email system is quite different and it is taking some getting used to. But, everything in the tech world changes on a daily basis so I'm sure just about the time I get used to this system, there will be a newer and better one. Unfortunately, I am finding the more they change things, the more complicated they become. So, now that I have a computer that works properly and this cold is almost gone, I can post more than just a photo and a few words.

I would like to share a problem with you. I am at a loss of what to do about my photographs. The photos on my old computer have been transferred to my new one ~ ALL 27,200 OF THEM!!!! I need to do something with them. I had an external hard drive that I was backing them up on, but it wasn't working properly so I lived in fear of losing those photos. I feel a little more secure having a new computer, but that really is no guarantee. Plus, I keep adding photos.

I toyed with using Carbonite, but I really want to remove most of the photos from my computer and have them elsewhere. I was going to put them on CDs, but I've been told that CDs don't always last. I'm just not sure what direction to go. I would be so unhappy if I were to lose these photos. There are many family photos and other photos that I want to enlarge, frame, and possibly sell. Unless I come up with some kind of storage system for my photographs, my computer is going to get bogged down with them. It's ok right now, but I keep taking photos and I see no end in sight.

I feel certain someone else out there has been faced with this dilemma and has found a solution. I welcome and would be grateful for any suggestions. ♥

This stream is only about a 10 minute ride from where I live. I love to go there now and then just to see and hear the water. This photo was taken in the Summer. I love the sense of peace I feel when I look at this photograph. Imagine how it feels to stand there and see all this beauty that God gave us. No matter where we live, we all have a place like this that makes us feel at peace and helps the stress to melt a little bit. It may be a flower garden, a field, a pond, or the park. No matter. The next time you are feeling overwhelmed, go to that place, sit for a few minutes and soak in the peacefulness and beauty. It might surprise you how much better you will feel. It may help you see things in a different light. You may have an important decision to make, or perhaps you just need some inspiration. Try it. It works. Do you realize how much negativity is thrown at us each day? We have to get rid of it ~ cast it aside ~ look at positive things ~ have positive thoughts.

This is a continuation from my earlier post asking all sisterfriends for prayers. I have been visiting blogs tonight and I see that the word is out that it is our dear Anne that is in need of our love and prayers. We all know what a trouper she is ~ a fighter ~ a survivor!! She will fight hard and we will fight with her. We, as a community of bloggers and sisterfriends, have united as one to pray for Anne. She has been there for all of us, it seems. I've read comments this evening that I could have written myself about how she reaches out, listens, understands, and makes us laugh. She is talented in many ways beyond her artistic abilities and God has to be pleased with all the majestic stoles and banners she has made over the years. There is no one else quite like her. She is truly our friend. We all want to see her well, happy, and creating in the studio she loves. God is good. He will listen to our unified prayers.

A Fun Visit with Ohio Family

My niece, Maria, and I, unwinding late at night after chasing her boys around the top of Mill Mountain. We did some serious laughing.

We took the boys to see the Roanoke Star on Mill Mountain. They had a ball running around in the woods and climbing on rocks up there.

We could barely get them to stand still long enough to take a photo in front of the star sign.

Jonathan (6) and Samuel (4) were smitten with Terry and his workshop. Terry put them to work and they had the best time. Samuel was quite serious about his cleaning duties.

These ear protectors were just a little too big for Samuel, but he would not give up on wearing them.

Jonathan was very intent on his sawing job. He never quit until he sawed through the little piece of wood Terry set up for him.

Workshop pals forever.

Terry promised they could help him weed and pick up stones. They found something fun to do while waiting for his instructions. I think Samuel got the better end of the deal.

They actually enjoyed working on that steep hill in the back. Terry isn't normally overjoyed when he works back there. I think because he had helpers, it made for a more pleasant work experience this time.

It was a fun weekend and great to spend some time with relatives we don't get to see often enough.

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a Mexican holiday. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family who have died. The celebration takes place on November 1st (All Saints' Day) and November 2nd (All Souls' Day), Catholic holidays. Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, skeletons, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed.

I have taken notice of this holiday over the past number of years and have come to love the art associated with it. Since my brother, Patrick, died in September of 2010, I decided to take part in Dia de Bloglandia this year. I had mentioned in a previous post that I planned to make a shrine in honor of Patrick for this event. That did not happen. However, I work in my sketchbook every night in bed with micro pens. I've been working on the above drawing in honor of Patrick and the things he loved in this life. Rather than be sad, I like the idea of celebrating his life with color and mention of his earthly loves. I think it would make him happy to know that he is being remembered and honored.

Now that I have an appreciation for this holiday and what it stands for, I plan to create more Day of the Dead art and to take part in this celebration each year honoring all friends and family who have died.

My sister, brother-in-law, niece and her two little boys are en route from Ohio for the weekend. I am busy preparing the guest rooms, etc. Full plate on my schedule today so I leave you with this fellow. He is high on the shelf at Black Dog Salvage, Roanoke's premier outlet for salvaged architectural elements and antiques ~ 40,000 square feet filled with antique wrought iron, mantles, doors, windows, vintage hardware and plumbing, stained glass, period lighting, garden statuary, old house parts, custom furniture, and more. Black Dog Salvage is one of my favorite places to go and worthy of a full blog post one day soon. But for now........I wonder if this guy will be coming down off his shelf to celebrate Halloween with his friends...................

Mom and I went out for lunch today and after that I had planned to go straight back home to work on my lengthy "to do" list. However...... it was 72* out and the remaining leaves on the trees had peaked in color. I HAD to drive around and enjoy the beauty of the day. Below is just a sampling of photos that I took. Well, my Geek Squad agent was here today. My computer is on its last leg. It has been sluggish for months now and doing strange things. It hasn't been letting me post to my blog, everytime I try to go to a website it goes offline, and many other annoying problems. He checked everything imaginable and it just doesn't want to comply. So, it looks like I'm going to have to say goodbye to this one and look into purchasing another. I'm thinking laptop this time. I'm not even sure this will post, but I wanted to let you know if I'm absent from blogging, facebook, and emails for a while, it's because my computer is being obstinate. I'm not going to rush into anything ~ I don't want to make a hasty decision. Hopefully, this one will hold on for a while yet. DH doesn't mind if I use his now and then, so I can always do that if necessary.

How cute is this wooden puppet?? When I go to my consignment spaces to work, I try hard to not shop the other spaces. LOL! Last week I spotted this guy up on a shelf ~ we made eye contact ~ he jumped right into my waiting arms!! He was a mess ~ his lines were all tangled and he couldn't move much of anything . Enter the help of my DH ~ once detangled, Mr. Puppet was all smiles. He happily hangs in my studio and we smile at each other every single day!! He needs a name. Any suggestions? When he decides which name he likes, he just might send you a little surprise!

I thought perhaps this little guy had stopped by to fill up before heading on his trip south. However, I just read that some hummingbirds will stay through the winter as long as you leave the liquid feeder out and the winter is mild. Hard telling if the winter will be mild, but I can certainly leave the feeder up and continue to put nectar in it. Our winters here in the Roanoke valley have been very mild ever since we moved here 5 years ago, with the exception of last year. But the entire country experienced an unusual winter, so maybe things will be more calm this year. It has continued to rain off and on the last few days but is looking like it might clear up now. Clear skies will probably make this little one happy even though he seems to be enjoying the drizzle.

And then....... three years later, after 16 grueling hours of hard labor, on October 11th, I delivered the cutest baby in the world. (We all say our baby was the cutest, don't we?) It was the happiest moment of my life ~ 38 years ago and I remember every moment. Casey has brought me nothing but joy in those 38 years. He is a loving and caring son, a hard worker, a good friend, a proud and handsome man. I was truly blessed the day he was born, Right now he is living 7 hours away. I miss seeing him often, but I cherish the time I do get to spend with him. Today I celebrate the day he was born!!

On a beautiful October 10th, 41 years ago, I married Jim Fish. That union gave us a precious son ~ Casey. This is a photo from our wedding day. Mom is on my left ~ Patrick is on the right. I was all of 22 years old. Goodness, where did those years go? Jim died in 1997 at the age of 49. Patrick died last September at the age of 67. My sweet Mother lives with Terry and I. She is 94 years young.

October is my favorite month ~ the beginning of my favorite season ~ FALL. Here in Virginia, we have been experiencing some cooler temperatures for about a week now. I have loved every minute of it ~ the dark clouds slowly walking across the sky, spaced perfectly to allow the sun to shine through the cracks giving us the best of both sun and clouds; the trees just beginning their change in color ~ soon to shower us with glorious beauty; the piles of pumpkins in storefronts and the sight and smell of cider and donuts in the grocery store; harvest festivals and craft shows; ghosts and goblins hanging from trees and orange lights glowing on post lights; I eagerly await the crunching sound of dry leaves that have fallen silently from their summer home; the sight and sound of cool crisp breezes blowing the tree branches every which way. I love to stand out in the yard in the dark when the wind is blowing, enjoying the wind against my face, smelling the lingering smoke of burned leaves, and listening to the night sounds.
All these wonderful Autumn gifts make me happy and bring the realization that the Holiday Season will soon be upon us with all its craziness and joy. But for now, I thank God for this glorious beautiful season of FALL and all the wonders that come with it.

Isn't she beautiful? When I came upon her, she was either too terrified to move, or she just didn't care. Standing only about 20 feet away, she stood there long enough to let me take several photos. The deer usually run fast whenever I approach them. She must have known I've been trying to get a good closeup for a LONG time. Once she heard me say "thank you", she took off into the woods.

Beauty in the Sky

Thursday evening we had a beautiful rain shower ~ it was quite overcast with dark clouds moving swiftly across the sky. As it often does, the sun decided to peek through during the latter part of the shower. It was quite nice - the soft rain coming down, the dark clouds above and the bright sun shining through them. I wondered ... and then suddenly it appeared.

It was GLORIOUS!!! I ran to grab my camera. One can never get the full effect of a rainbow in a photo, but I had to capture a little of it. It was huge, deep in color, and full across the sky from one end to the other. Then ... there was another. It was a DOUBLE rainbow! I had never seen a double before. Unfortunately, those dark clouds were on the outer rim of the first rainbow and pretty much hid the second one. If you look closely, you can see it.

All that beauty overtook my senses and I was pretty much dancing around the yard snapping pictures and yelling about the beauty of the rainbow. I was trying to capture it from all angles before it faded away. And as it always does ~ it did fade away ~ leaving me standing in the rain, in the middle of the yard, camera in hand, with only its memory.

God must do that intentionally ~ give us surprise moments of beauty to remind us of His power. The rainbow was a simple thing, but I thank Him for it. For those few minutes my heart was filled with happiness and my eyes were filled with the color and beauty of nature.

Rainbows don't come often, but I'm thankful when they do.

Because I have no more room in any of my bookcases, this STACK of Ideals Magazines are stacked in my studio. I use photos from these beautiful old magazines on my blog.

This is my STACK of journals. Can anyone have enough journals? I have spiral journals, boxed journals, leather journals, homemade journals, small journals and large journals. These are just the writing journals ~ my art journals are in another room.

Now this is a mess. This is my "to go through" STACK. I'm surprised it's still standing. It wobbles when I add anything to the top. It is definitely time to start weeding through it because as much as I hate to admit this ~ there are more "to go through" piles elsewhere. I sure hope I'm not the only one who has these.

This is my drawing paper and texture making STACK. I use these papers, napkins, net bags, bubble wrap pieces, etc., when I'm making a mixed media painting.

Not a very tall STACK, but a stack of recently purchased old prints. Not sure what I'll use them for at the moment, but they were the right price and irresistible!

A Beautiful Poppy Painting

I purchased another beauty the other day ~ couldn't help myself. This beautiful 5" x 5" poppy, painted in acrylics on gallery wrapped canvas, was painted by my friend, Silke Powers, of Metamorphosis.

Silke doesn't usually paint flowers, but one day last week she was inspired to paint this and I'm so glad she did. I love poppies and this single poppy says it all. A dear friend of mine wrote this poem. She said the photograph of my Grandpa inspired her to write it. She is the sweetest person and writes about many things. The things she has written that I've had the good fortune to read have all been written with love and her good heart shines through all the words. I have a few writings of hers that I've intended to post and will do so one day. I've known her for many years ~ since I was a young child living at my Grandpa's house ~ but I haven't seen her since high school. Through email, she contacted me about 4 years ago. I'm so glad she did. We've been corresponding ever since and getting to know her again has been a blessing to me. We live in different areas of the country, but plan to meet one day.
Thank you, my friend, for sharing this poem. It is beautiful and speaks lovingly about all the Grandfathers who worked hard to make a good life for their families. I hope you won't mind that I've shared it. I believe anything that stirs emotions of love should be shared.

Thinking of you today, Grandpa, on your birthday. Although you left this earth many years ago, I have such fond memories of being your granddaughter. I remember your laugh and I will always remember that you were the one who introduced me to the world of art when you took me on that long walk to the Art Museum. Thank you for that. Art is, and always has been, a very important part of my life.

You were a good man who took good care of his children. You brought my mother up with a strong faith in God and she passed that on to her children. I like to believe that you were there to welcome Patrick when he left this earth. He thought so much of you, too, Grandpa, and I know how happy he must have been to see you again. We lost Uncle Steve shortly after losing Patrick. I keep that picture in my mind ~ you, together with your son and grandson ~ it makes the loss a little less painful.

Suzun Hughes

This is my latest purchase. It is an 18" x 18" painting done by Suzun Hughes. Suzun, a Philadelphia born painter and photographer, having been based in San Francisco since 1975, moved to Virginia in 2007. Suzun and her husband ~ sculptor John Wilson ~ own and operate WILSON HUGHES, a contemporary art gallery located in the historic downtown ARTS District of Roanoke.

I've been to their gallery on several occasions and found it to be a fun and interesting gallery where they not only show their own works of art, but have their studios and residence there as well. They also have showings of other artists work from time to time.

This particular piece is an abstract from Suzun's CONTEMPLATION SERIES. I love the smooth surface, the many layers of paint, and the colors she used. I was drawn to it immediately and it looks like it was made for the wall I've hung it on.

On the 11th day of September, 2001, the world stood still as our country was attacked. Ten years have passed since that awful day in New York City when the Twin Towers fell. "We Will Never Forget" are the words that ring in our ears ever since. Ten years later, the horror is still fresh in our minds as we remember the events of that day. Ten years later, and we still fight the war on terror.
I have chosen to post a photo of the Twin Towers as they were before September 11th ~ tall, proud, and beautiful buildings that will be remembered for all time.
I send out a prayer today to all those lost on 9-11-01 and to their families and friends who will mourn their loss until the day they are united with their loved ones again.

Hi Friends.
I have been having computer problems for over a week. I had several days of internet service on and off literally every few minutes, and then it went to NONE!! I had Comcast here yesterday, as well as a computer tech. Things were looking good for a short while, and then NO SERVICE again last night! After the help of a friend tech a while ago, I have internet service right now. I am holding my breath that it lasts. I may have to look into this further as things just don't seem to be running properly.
I just wanted to let you know why I haven't been posting anything. I have photos from last week's nasty storm, and hopefully I can get them posted this weekend. I hope to visit your blogs in the next few days, as well.
Unfortunately, my "Grrrrr Face" arrived when the internet service went out ~ It's time for smiles to return! I hope everyone is well.

Feathers and Remembrance

I've decided to get involved in two projects this Fall that both involve a little art. The first one is THE MAGIC FEATHER PROJECT. The Magic Feather Project is a collective stitching project focused on creative sharing and giving. Jude Hill of spirit cloth, is hosting this project. I will stitch a feather on a piece of cloth and send it to Jude. Once she receives 1000 stitched feathers, she is going to sew the cloths together and donate one large or several small blankets to a charity that is associated with children. She will be posting the feathers on her blog as she receives them. For more information on this project, click on the feather on my sidebar. I thank my friend Constanza, of por amor al arte, for posting about this project on her blog and getting me interested in the project.

The second project is THE ART OF REMEMBERING. It centers around November 1st, All Souls Day (the Day of the Dead). It will be an honoring of loved ones now gone and a deep joy filled awareness to live life fully straight from the heart. We will share photographs, art, tutorials, dia de los muertos inspired art, and anything to fan the flames of enthusiasm for this soulful celebration. This project is being hosted by Stephanie Hilvitz of Mango Studio and Rebecca Brooks of Recuerda mi corazon. For more information, click on the dia de bloglandia heart on my sidebar. I thank my friend Pam, of Yoborobo, for posting about this project on her blog. I love what Pam had to say about it. Not Quite Flying, But Soon

Talisman

This summer, I purchased two original works of art by Adrienne Trafford. They are both from her Journey Oracle Deck. The tree with eggs is the work of art that is on the back of each of the cards in the deck. The Talisman is card #3o in the deck. These paintings are 4" x 6" and they are encased in glass, ready to hang.

On the back of the tree painting, Adrienne has written: "I think a bird's nest with eggs is such a hopeful thing. It is so filled with promise and potential." I chose this painting because of my strong love for trees and birds.

On the back of the Talisman painting, Adrienne has written: "It wasn't HER heart, but she suddenly felt quite powerful with it around..." I chose this painting because I like the idea of a talisman. A talisman is an object held to act as a charm to avert evil and bring good fortune ~ sometimes magical. I love the heart and everything about the girl ~ her hair, her tattoos, the look on her face.

Both of these works of art are signed and dated on the back. I am very happy to add them to my collection of art.

Earthquakes and Hurricanes

There is still a lot of talk going on about the recent earthquake that took place here in Virginia on Tuesday. The news today reported that aftershocks could possibly take place for up to two weeks after the earthquake. No thanks! One good shakeup was enough for me.

We only live about 1-1/2 hours from where the epicenter of the earthquake was. I was in my studio ~ I had just sat down at my desk when I started hearing little noises like things shaking in a jar. Suddenly, the room was moving and everything in my studio was rattling ~ the jars of paint, the beads in containers, the buttons in jars, everything ~ it sounded like a giant windchime. And then it stopped. I had never experienced that sensation before. I knew it was an earthquake and after the shaking stopped, I found myself holding tightly onto my desk with both hands. It was an experience I don't want repeated. Truth be told ~ it was frightening.

It amazes me that it was felt so far away. I immediately got on Facebook and the comments started popping up ~ earthquake in Canada ~ earthquake in North Carolina ~ earthquake in Pennsylvania, etc. News reports today stated that this earthquake was felt by 1/3 of the country.

Thankfully, we had no damage of any kind. I do now have a more realistic sympathy for those who experience severe earthquakes around the world. Not only is an earthquake frightening, the devastation of property and life can be catastrophic.

Now, we have this large hurricane ~ Irene ~ bearing down on our Eastern Coastline. Of course, my first thoughts were of Casey and Amanda in Charleston, SC. Thank God, it sounds like Charleston will be safe, but I fear for those in North Carolina all the way up the coast to Maine. I have many Blog friends living in those areas and I hope you will all be taking the necessary precautions. I will be thinking of you and praying for your safety.

When I read a good uplifting story, I always want to share. There are too many depressing stories to read these days. This article is from The Power of Prayer Newsletter ~ it's an excerpt from Their Mysterious Ways Too. The Yellow Lab photo is not Alex ~ it is from the internet ~ I thought it would be nice to have a picture to relate to.

The Boy Who Needed Alex

My yellow lab, Alex, a certified therapy dog, tugged at her leash and trotted down the elementary school hallway, eager to get to the kids we'd been visiting the past couple of months. She stopped at our usual classroom. I straightened her red scarf and opened the door. But there were no kids. Just the teacher. That's odd, I thought.

For years, I'd prayed for the chance to raise a therapy dog, and Alex was a natural. A whip-smart, energetic pup, she breezed through obedience training and became certified at just a year old. Deep in my heart, I knew Alex was meant to do good in the world. When one of her instructors told me about Dog Tales, a volunteer group that visits schools and libraries with therapy dogs, encouraging folks to read, it sounded perfect. Alex loved kids so I signed her up. Our assignment was the local elementary school. From our first visit, the kids bonded to Alex. Every time we came back, the students couldn't wait to sit and read with Alex.

But that day, with our regular class missing, I wondered if we could help at all. I worried about Alex. She needed to do her therapy work. "I'm so sorry," the teacher said. "I forgot to call you. The kids are out working on a project today." Alex sat next to me and whined. "Could we visit another class?" I asked. The teacher thought for a moment. "There is a class that would enjoy seeing..."

"Perfect!" I said. She led the way down the hall, and Alex and I followed. Then Alex stopped short in front of another door. "C'mon girl," I said, tugging on her leash. But my normally obedient dog wouldn't budge. She wanted to, no, had to, enter this classroom. The teacher asked the class if they'd like to meet Alex. Then she waved us in. It was a small class, maybe ten kids. "Hi, everyone," I said. "This is Alex..."

Before I could finish, Alex made a beeline for a boy who was sitting on the carpet, his head down. She snuggled up to him and put her chin on his shoulder. The boy quietly put his arm around her.

I read a story to the kids. With each turn of the page, I caught a glimpse of the boy stroking Alex's coat. She never left his side. That's funny, I thought. Usually Alex makes her rounds and visits with all the kids. After we said our goodbyes, the teacher walked over. "May I please speak to you in the hallway?"

"Of course," I said, following her.

"I know you have a schedule, but could Alex visit us each week too?"

"We'd love to," I said. Then I saw tears in her eyes. "Did I say something wrong?"

She shook her head and pointed to the little boy. "He's been depressed for months. We've tried everything, and we just can't break through to him. But it looks like Alex has."

Alex and I kept going back to that classroom. Each week that little boy brightened a bit more. Today he's a happy fifth grader, who still gets visits from Alex and me. Who could've known Alex would make such a big difference in a child's life? But that's what happens sometimes, isn't it? We ask God to give us opportunities to help, and He leads us to where we're needed. Or rather, He led my dog.
